Abrahams’ figures test themselves to the limit with an audacity uniquely of today, their pride in the possibilities of the body transcending usual notions of elegance. The models are accomplished performers, often members of experimental dance companies. The models never ‘pose’ for him, instead they literally dance in the studio. He records their movements with camera, sketch pad, wax maquette.He photographs his models’ dance movements in his studio, takes stills from videos of Olympic gymnasts, and uses reproductions of his own sculptures, working over these by hand, cutting, photocopying, collaging, always in search of the formal essentials of the dynamic movements which he has made the subject of his art.
